BAIC Automobile SA(PTY) Ltd. was established in 2016 as a joint venture between China BAIC Group and South Africa Industrial Development Corporation (IDC). BAIC Group's investment accounted for 65% and IDC's 35%. The factory is located in Coega Development Zone, Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, South Africa, and a marketing center is set up in Johannesburg. BAIC SA mainly focuses on the complete vehicle business, supplemented by parts supporting business, and is committed to building a global production base and export vehicle base based in South Africa and radiating to Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and other regions.

Paint shop has a planned production capacity of 50,000 units, designed a clean beat of 12JPH, and the project can realize flexible production of multiple models, multiple platforms. Workshop process equipment adopts hierarchical classification centralized layout, workshop design adopts partial two-storey steel platform structure, the total construction area of the project is 20993 square meters.The workshop adopts a variety of technical equipment, such as 3C2B process + air conditioning circulating air + robot external spraying + waste gas incineration RTO, and water-based paint to reduce pollution. With environmental protection, green, energy saving, high efficiency and other characteristics.

Bodyshop covers an area of 10,608 square meters, the production beat 14.5JPH, annual capacity of 50,000 units, the comprehensive operation rate of 88%. The main areas include: front cabin assembly line (ER), rear floor assembly line (RF), vehicle body assembly line (UB), main welding line (MB), adjustment line (FL). There are 32 robots in the whole line, 49 stations, welding automation rate of 60%, body transfer automation rate of 100%, UB&MB and body adjustment line can realize the mixed production of four models (including left and right rudder), through the mechanical switch of fixture, to meet the positioning and clamping of different platform models.

Assembly shop area is 41,768㎡, including 31,160㎡ for general assembly, 10,608㎡ for welding and 5,800㎡ for logistics storage. The annual production capacity of the workshop is 50,000 vehicles. The production line adopts a flexible design, which can realize mixed production of different platforms (load-bearing/non-load-bearing body) and multiple models.

The Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) of South Africa Limited was established in 1940 through an Act of Parliament and is fully owned by the South African Government. It has assets of US$10.7 billion. The place of registration and main office is Johannesburg, South Africa. IDC's business covers South Africa and other African countries, and it is a financial company (institution) that provides financial support for enterprises and investment projects that promote the development of industrialization in Africa.

On April 24, 2016, BAIC Group signed a joint development agreement with IDC.

On August 30, 2016, BAIC SA officially laid the foundation.

On July 1, 2017, the first steel column of BAIC SA factory was successfully lifted.

October 23, 2021

On Ocotber 23, 2021, BAIC SA B40 was listed in Johannesburg.

October 25, 2022

On October 25, 2022, paint shop equipment installation of the BAIC SA officially began.

November 15, 2022

On November 15, 2022, BAIC SA X55 was successfully launched in South Africa market.
